Why is the inclusion of exogenous beta-glucanase enzyme mandatory in wheat-based layer diets to prevent wet litter and dirty brown eggs?

When formulating feed in Pakistan, wheat is often used as an alternative energy source to corn during the wheat harvest season. However, wheat contains high levels of soluble Non-Starch Polysaccharides (NSPs), specifically beta-glucans and arabinoxylans. These soluble fibers are highly hygroscopic; they absorb massive amounts of water in the digestive tract, forming a thick, gelatinous, high-viscosity digesta. This high viscosity slows down feed passage, limits the diffusion of digestive enzymes (lipases, proteases) to their substrates, and promotes the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the hindgut (dysbiosis). This results in malabsorption, diarrhea, and extremely wet droppings. Wet manure increases ammonia levels and causes "dirty eggs" due to fecal staining in nesting boxes or cage floors. Manure-stained brown eggs are severely penalized in wholesale mandis. Supplementing wheat-based feeds with exogenous beta-glucanase and xylanase enzymes hydrolyzes these soluble NSPs into small, non-viscous sugars, restoring normal gut passage, reducing water excretion, and keeping eggshells spotless.
